In 1958,the Club held the first of several annual contests at their new "facility". The relationship with the City was apparent at this point, as they had good coverage of this event in the media. I know one of the contests was held in conjunction with Airport Appreciation Days. According to the Newton Daily News, one of those years, there was an attendance of 3500 spectators, and 40 participants at the annual contest. Another year, 2000 spectators, and at least the same number of flyers. These events were well advertised, and well executed. Even by todays standards, these are pretty impressive numbers.
